Modeled much after the Intersystems Alliance Katana-class Frigate, the Pharthalain-class, built by the Threshold Navy, while still technologically advanced, couldn't quite compare with the ISA without their many well-kept secrets, and is so a much larger vessel, in order to try to be able to emulate the finer of the two.
The Pharthalain is also designed to be one of the primary EW platforms, and as such has EW systems that might be found on much, much larger vessels of the other nations, which also owes to it's near-destroyer size, while still retaining a frigate's role.
The larger mass drives are an attempt by the designers to give it some role and punch of a larger vessel, due to the limited resources of the small Hadrian Navy.
